Program Philosophy

We at University Commons recognize that the development of a well adjusted individual is dependent upon the early years of a child’s life. Of foremost importance to us is the child’s safety and well-being.

Our daily activities are designed to be appropriate to the developmental stage of each child. The child is an active participant in a playing, living, learning setting that promotes each child’s sense of security and self-esteem.

Our main objective is to provide a safe setting that promotes the total growth of the child’s development in all the facets of self – the cognitive self, the physical self, the emotional self, the social self, and the creative self.

University Commons offers the following components that we feel affect the quality of the program:

  • Staff who are professionally educated and experienced in understanding children’s unique developmental needs.
  • Opportunities to interact in small groups which facilitate a positive developmental outcome and encourage more elaborate play, language, cooperation and interactions.
  • A developmentally appropriate curriculum and physical space that fosters a positive learning experience through discovery and exploration.
  • An intergenerational program, bringing residents and children together on a regular basis for joint activities, games, readings and socialization. Unique in the Worcester area, this program offers a positive experience for residents and children alike.
